Self Publishing

When The Other Canal was nearly finished I began to research how to get it published.  I subscribe to The Writing Magazine and find that a great publication.  From there I saw the London Book Fair was on and so I enrolled for the Master Class on getting published.

The class was very helpful.  There was an Editor, a Publisher, an Author and a Self-published Author as well as the literary editor Carole Blake on the panel.  I listened to them attentively and they answered many questions from the audience.  Carole's book From Pitche to Publication was invaluable.

From there I decided that self-publication was the best route for me.  I contacted Siobahn Curham, the Self-published Author on the panel, and she was kind enough to point me in the direction of how to go about it.  I eventually decided not to go with a company that moved to the USA during our negotiations, and went with Troubador - Matador being their self-publishing department.  They have been helpful, prompt and courteous.

I am pleased with the book and with the cover which I had designed professionally.  I wish I could have afforded the marketing package, but it was beyond my budget, so I am marketing it myself.  This has not proved easy as I am also moving house!  I have managed to signings at Waterstones and have two talks at libraries to come.  (See blog info.)

I have had good reviews and several people say it would make a good film.  One step at a time, but it is fun to wonder who would make a good Nigel, Laura, Fliss, Ellie and Jeff.  Do let me know what you think.

Cheers.
